Summary: | The article identifies traces of the thought of the Belo Monte (Canudos) leader that appear somehow linked to the writings of Paul of Tarsus present in the New Testament. It also notes how the relationship that Antonio Conselheiro establishes with these texts combines interpretative freedom, creative reworking and even refusal to accept meanings that were presented as obvious to this or that passage. This points to ways in which one can perceive how the Pauline texts have made history, through the pen and the action of Antonio Conselheiro in the lives and hopes of thousands of people who gambled their present and their future building a peculiar settlement, finally destroyed by the joining of forces between political, military and ecclesiastical powers in 1897. |
