Summary: | Of the many Hindu rituals which characterize the life of the Hindu community the Vivalia or Marriage Samskara provides an important paradigm for the continuation and perpetuation of the most fundamental precepts of Hindu religious life. The ritual framework of Vivaha Samskara represents a paradigmatic means of socio-cultural integration, appropria- tion and perpetuation of religio-philosophical ideas from the Vedic age to the present day. The aim of this paper will demonstrate that performance of the Vivaha Samskara is seen as important and intrinsically meaningful because it represents on a microcosmic scale various cosmic transitions which locate the ritual paradigm of Vivaha within the Hindu Wel- tanschauung. |
