This situation is reflected in the Natal context where the veneration of the village or folk Goddesses is particularly prevalent among Hindus, and can be traced back to its practice in South India which the early Tamil settlers brought with them to South Africa from 1860 onwards. This article concentrates on the worship of these folk Goddesses, as this has been preserved and grown into a flourishing cult, in both rural and urban areas of Natal, and is no longer confined to Tamil circles.
