The paper argues that some of the policies of the Tunisian government since independence have triggered a process that created a complex field of negotiation around what Islam means and how it ought to guide Tunisian society. The work of Olfa Youssef provides an example of how the field of interpreting Islam has expanded, creating a unique space of intelligibility that challenges our understanding of what Islam entails in modern contexts.
