The site became a public space in 1896 when the house two down from the synagogue (where Theodor Herzl was born) was demolished during the re-planning of the city. The development of the plot only started after World War I, when the Heroes’ synagogue, intended as a memorial to Jewish soldiers, and the park were built. At the end of World War II, the buildings and the garden became part of the Budapest ghetto. When the ghetto was liberated, the dead bodies of thousands of Jews were found in the streets. 2283 of these were buried in the garden, and are still there. The article examines the story of the cemetery-garden, and its uses as a memorial place.
