This meditation explores the murmurs of the heart – its iterations and repetitions in the shadows of translation – from within Islamic traditions and experience, embedded in the deathworld under a War on Terror regime, as it confronts and haunts history. This is immanent muraqaba (spiritual vigilance): not practices of the self and assessment of the world in an ideal environment but a muraqaba which situates itself within the devastation of the Shapla killings. The text itself is also a form of muraqaba, a practice in which the ethnographer finds himself under the direct gaze of God, and the text – displacing subjectivity, collapsing time, and delimiting language – constructs itself, albeit in a disoriented state. | ||
