It also is agreed that women were accorded considerably higher status within Christian circles than in the surrounding pagan societies. In this essay I first explain how these two aspects of the early church were connected. Then I explain how an excess of women in the Christian subcultures, combined with a great excess of males in the world around them, would have resulted in a substantial rate of intermarriage. Finally, I show how this would have maintained early Christianity as an open network thereby able to sustain the attachments to non-members needed for continued growth. | ||
