First, sociology as a discipline emerged part and parcel with the decline of religion in Western nations. Sociological theory is in some ways predicated upon the secularization thesis. The apparent rise of spiritual interests would therefore constitute a challenge to the discipline's most fundamental assumptions. Of particular interest, then, is the very open question of whether forms of modern spirituality that exist outside traditional religious institutions are symptoms or antidotes to the forces of secularization. Second, the topic of spirituality raises a host of theoretical and methodological challenges that test the limits of sociological investigation.
