In the last three decades or so, however, unbeknown to most sociologists in China and the West, a quiet spiritual revolution has swept the vast land. Contemporary China is indeed a fertile field for sociologists to examine the social importance of religion in the modern world. The author explains what questions have propelled his empirical research and theoretical development. Constructively engaged with both classic and contemporary sociologists, the author calls for going beyond national boundaries and transcend various forms of parochialism in their social scientific endeavor.
