The method of the research was by personal interview with a pre-tested and standardized schedule. First, there is some small range of achieved status within the housemaid occupation. Secondly, the most widely preferred change is by escape to jobs of modestly higher status. Thirdly, the relatively rigid social structure of Chile presently precludes the possibility that higher status will be ascribed to domestic service.
