| Zusammenfassung: | La position désaxée par rapport au cardo antique de la porte romaine située sous l'actuelle porte de Damas s'explique par la topographie et par le lien que la porte entretenait avec la voie de la vallée du Tyropeon. La place de forme incurvée, telle qu'elle apparaît sur la carte de Madaba, permettait de raccorder de façon harmonieuse la porte et les voies d'orientations différentes qui y aboutissaient. Sa restitution est confortée par l'existence de solutions proches à Shahba (Philippopolis), Bosra et Jérash. L'hypothèse d'une colonne au centre de la place, représentée sur la mosaïque de Madaba, de même que celle d'un arc monumental au nord de la porte, sont fort incertaines. The difference in axis, in relation to the ancient Cardo of the Roman gate under the present day Damascus Gate is explained by the topography and by the link that the gate had with the road through the Tyropeon valley. The curved piazza, as it appears on the Madaba Map, had the benefit of bringing into line nicely the gate and the variously oriented streets which reached it. Its restoration is supported by similar solutions at Shahba (Philippopolis), Bosra and Jerash. The restoration, also, of a column in the centre of the piazza, as shown on the Madaba Map, as that of a monumental arch at the Northern side of the gate, are highly hypothetical. |
