The following research is part of the fruit of six-years of research into one question: What did the serpent symbolize in antiquity? For the first time a list is provided of the 41 nouns employed by the ancient Greeks to signify a reptile that was a type of snake. The list assists translators and exegetes to be more precise and re-present the phenomenological sophistication reflected by Hellenic and Hellenistic Greek, the Greek found in the Septuagint, the Greek Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, the Greek New Testament (which should not simply be branded as Koine), and Patristics. Philologians, historians, and New Testament scholars have been ignorant of iconography, symbology, and the numerous negative and positive meanings of serpent symbolism by the end of the first century CE. Qu'il y ait 41 noms utilisés par les anciens Grecs pour désigner le serpent, et ses espèces, reste méconnu des philologues. La recherche ci-après est un élément d'une enquête de six années autour de la question : que symbolise le serpent dans l'Antiquité? Pour la première fois, une liste des quarante et une manières qu'avaient les anciens Grecs de désigner un reptile du type du serpent. La liste doit aider les traducteurs et les exégètes à être plus précis et illustre l'élaboration phénoménologique du grec classique et hellénistique ; celui de la LXX, des Pseudépigraphes de l'A.T., celui du N.T. (qui ne saurait être réduit à la koine), et enfin le grec patristique. Les philologues, les historiens et les exégètes du N.T. ont ignoré l'iconographie, la symbolique, et les nombreuses significations négatives et positives du symbolisme du serpent vers la fin du Ier siècle ap.
