Deriving at least in part from the original Puritan experience of colonization, this obsession has determined the form as well as the substance of many of our most representative fictions, and that in a distinctive manner. As American writers and thinkers have imagined the ideal "other" in three discrete modes, so they have proposed, respectively, three discrete ways for the self to respond and readjust to it. These three discrete proposals for accommodation to the experience of otherness may be construed as three generic definitions of the nature of true virtue and thus may be seen to contribute to our understanding of the irregular metaphysics of the American experience. | ||
