Differing patterns of religious identity of the children depend upon whether the parental marriage type is father-Catholic and mother Protestant or father-Protestant and mother-Catholic. Religious patterns of identity differ in degree, depending upon whether the child of a mixed parental marriage is a son or a daughter. Differing patterns of church attendance were found, depending upon whether the child was a son or a daughter, a Catholic or a Protestant, and the religious identities of his parents. The study underlines the discrete nature of two religious systems--Catholic and Protestant; it emphasizes the differential impact of religion upon the sexes and calls attention to the varying influence of the mother as a role-model.
