520 | |a The nature of the relationship between theological beliefs, theological self-classification, and socio-political beliefs is examined. This relationship is approached through the study of changes in these beliefs among students at an evangelical Christian liberal arts college. Over a period of four years, it is found that students' beliefs did not change uniformly. Theological beliefs remained essentially conservative, while the self-identification of "fundamentalist" was rejected. Students experienced quite noticeable liberalization of ascetic moral and sociopolitical beliefs. The findings are explained in terms of initial socialization within a conservative religious subculture. Upon exposure to a liberal arts education, students realize that their belief configurations are not necessarily logically interrelated. It is suggested that change in socio-political and ascetic moral beliefs is not necessarily related to change in theological beliefs, depending upon the context of change. | ||
