Summary: | Because biased religion coverage in the elite press affects the sociopolitical role denominations play in society, a study of the 1977 coverage of denominations in the NEW YORK TIMES and the WASHINGTON POST was conducted. The results show that numerical biases were present: establishment denominations tended to receive inordinate coverage and prominent placement, while evangelical groups were slighted. The numerical biases probably resulted to a large degree from the issues which were reported most often. |
