| Résumé: | This article examines the contributions of Kenneth W. Underwood to policy research, ethics, and scholarship. Its emphasis is on Underwood's dedication to the fusion of "moral vision, the corridors of power, and the techniques of social research" first evidenced in the publication of his book Protestant and Catholic. The article's focus is on Underwood's directorship of the Danforth Study of Campus Ministries. "It is... in the Danforth Study... that we observe in operation the Underwood conception of social policy." The author then presents a critical assessment of Underwood's social policy perspective. This is an important commentary, and through the publication of such histories and reflections we provide to the future scholars in the sociology of religion an understanding of the contexts in which earlier researchers and practitioners worked. |
