A factor analysis of the responses provided eleven factors from which subscales were composed. Subscale scores were calculated for each respondent and the means of these scores are the basis for discussion in this paper. Reasons related to personal religious development were found to be the most influential in the decision to participate, followed by a desire to prepare for church and community service, and cognitive interest. The least influential reasons were the desire to escape, the need to meet external expectations, and the desire to keep up and conform socially.
