Because it refers to such crucially important issues--some say secularization spells the slow death of religion--it is vital that constant attention is paid to the development of the concept in the light of contemporary social transformations and current research. This article firstly gives a summary survey of the concept's career, and secondly suggests six reasons for rethinking secularization. Awareness of such an agenda alerts us to the nature of the ongoing secularization debate, and should stimulate further inquiry. Rethinking secularization does not entail abandoning the term, but rather clarifying it and going beyond it. The process of rethinking secularization improves our understanding of modern society, contributes to today's social science controversies, and illuminates the dynamics of church practice and strategy in the late twentieth century. | ||
