This essay will examine the extent to which that occurred, look at the issues and motives involved, and show how it came close to being unparalleled in American history. The role of religion per se as a factor in American politics is not at issue here, because more or less it has always been present. Moreover, the constitutional guarantee to the free exercise of religion contained in the First Amendment reinforces the claim of those citizens who bring religious concerns to bear upon public life that they have the right to do so. The questions under consideration, rather, are whether the religious backers of President Reagan in their enthusiasm exceeded the bounds of propriety and whether this effort was necessary to secure his reelection.
