520 |a While Richardson (1984) posits an Old Right coalition of Mormons and Catholics in Nevada ERA politics, Davis (1980) and Fishman and Fuller (1981) assume that Mormons already have been incorporated into the New Religious Right though Shupe and Heinerman (1985) anticipate an emergent coalition of the Moral Majority and the Mormon Church. In contrast, Brinkerhoff, Jacob, and MacKie (1985) reject any prospects for a Mormon New Christian Right coalition, a position with which Mauss and Bradford (1985) concur. Following an examination of the arguments and evidence used in this debate, I argue that proponents of an emergent coalition present a more compelling case than the critics. However, Shupe and Heinerman could strengthen their argument by grounding any potential coalition in Mormon anti-ERA politics.
