A convenience sample of 198 persons who indicated they prayed or meditated responded to a modified mysticism scale and an imagery scale in order to test two specific hypotheses: first, that intrinsic persons would interpret their prayer experiences in religious terms more than extrinsics, and second, that neither intrinsics nor extrinsics would differ on any measures from their indiscriminate counterparts. In addition, differences between religious types on minimal phenomenological criteria and on imagery were assessed in an exploratory fashion. Results suggest that actual prayer experiences and not simply the interpretation of prayer experiences may differ between intrinsics and extrinsics. Unanticipated differences between religious types were also obtained on imagery measures.
