Prayer is one of these. Using data taken from a random sample of Midwesterners, this study examines the prevalence and correlates of prayer specifically addressed to health concerns. Prayer, it was found, was regarded by almost one in three respondents as an efficacious tactic for maintaining and restoring health, but not at the expense of conventional biomedical care. The implications for health care professionals are considered.
