In church-supported colleges, this may be illustrated by the ways professors and trustees relate to the dilemma of religious socialization and secular instruction. Current developments in the Southern Baptist Convention reveal a fundamentalist/conservative strategy of creating and exploiting a structural cleavage between trustees and professors. Survey data are presented to show that while a cleavage is not apparent in Baptist colleges at the time of the survey (1991), a fairly consistent pattern of differences in the relative endorsement of attitudes toward religious socialization and secular education does exist.
