Specifically, we employed cluster analysis to construct eight measures of key dimensions of American Catholic religiosity. We then tested convergent, discriminant, and construct validity hypotheses related to these measures and found that while the cluster measures were interrelated in expected ways, they also capture distinct features of American Catholic religiosity. Further, the cluster measures were useful in significantly and differentially improving the prediction of an important public policy attitudinal variable. The paper concludes that to better understand the role of religion in the lives of American Catholics, scholars should develop and validate more sophisticated measurement systems such as the type we describe. | ||
