Despite the importance of this research, samples are limited predominantly to Christians, and we cannot tell whether such relationships extend to other populations. Using data from large, nationally representative probability samples of Japanese adults, this study reveals that religious devotion and affiliation with certain religions are positively and significantly correlated with life satisfaction and happiness in Japan. Multiple regression analysis shows cross-cultural similarities between subjective religiousness and subjective well-being. The effects of religious affiliation (an objective measure), however, vary. In addition, findings show that religious devotion buffers the negative effects of unemployment on life satisfaction and happiness and the effects of low class status on happiness.
