At first glance, these findings suggest that the more political messages that African Americans hear from their clergy, the more critical they are of the immigrant presence. However, a more careful look at the data suggests that these political messages only sway the immigration attitudes of those who are worried about their own or the nation's economic well being. This may suggest that economically concerned African Americans are particularly sensitive to political cues that emphasize policies, immigration being among them, that may threaten African American life chances.
