Marchia, a Franciscan theologian active in Paris around 1320, developed a very original and philosophically sophisticated doctrine of the will, in which he attempted to find a balance between, on the one hand, the position of Scotus, which held even beatific fruition to be free and contingent, and, on the other, the more traditional opinion defended in the Parisian Franciscan milieu, which held beatitude to be free and necessary. Distinguishing between different levels of freedom (essential and accidental freedom), Marchia formulated a theory of considerable interest for the development of Franciscan thought in the fourteenth century.\n4207 \n4207
