520 |a Recognizing that methods cannot be considered independently from theoretical and conceptual frameworks, this paper offers some observations on methods attached to consideration of religion a) as an independent variable and b) as a dependent variable. With respect to religion as an independent variable, the focus is on the multi-dimensional model developed by Glock and Stark, among others. The contributions, as well as the drawbacks of the model are discussed. With respect to religion as a dependent variable, the focus is on the life cycle of religiosity, and suggestions are made as to how specific research strategies, particularly use of the “life table” approach might be helpful in an understanding of changes of religious affiliation and loss rates among clergy.
