It is argued (a) that participants in a wide variety of these movements do experience such feelings; (b) that these feelings are produced in a significantly different manner in devotee, discipleship, and apprenticeship groups; and (c) that this reduced sense of moral accountability constitutes one of the appealing aspects of these movements because it helps people deal with the modern dilemma of moral accountability.
