Fifty-one congregations were purposively selected, their liturgies observed, and the data probed heuristically in a search for testable propositions. Factor analysis yielded empiricistic groupings: “High Church,” Mainline Protestant, Eastern Rite, Urban Black, Pentecostal, and Independent temple. Selected social variables were related to measures of Language, Gestures, Costume, Audience Size, and Proportion of Seating filled. This exploratory effort suggests that fruitful study of liturgies is possible with relatively simple instruments capable of gathering rich data.
