Summary: | This paper attempts to explain the occurrence of people claiming no religious identity (“nones”) in the years 1957–1982 using Wuthnow's (1978) change model. The model does not fit data from 1957 nor 1963, but is consistent with information for the period 1972–82. It is argued that in 1957, and to some extent in 1963, structural-type nones predominated, while in the 1970s cultural-type nones did so. The adequacy of Wuthnow's model for understanding different types of nones and for understanding nones in different historical periods is discussed. |
