We constructed a survey to determine whether there is indeed a considerable gap to be identified between theologians and parishioners. We surveyed professional Catholic theologians and Catholic parishioners and found that while there are significant differences between theologians and parishioners on most issues of religious belief they are not polarized. Rather, there is considerable overlap between the groups with theologians tending to understand beliefs in a more nuanced manner. Implications of the findings are discussed.
