Summary: | One way to deal with the process of secularization empirically is to compare indicators of the influence of religion over time. It is hypothesized that there is a historical trend for a decrease in the influence of religion. Data are presented from paintings in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. The data show a steady decrease in religious themes in paintings from the 14th to the 20th centuries. |
