Declared its first President: “There is such a thing as Catholic sociology.” Subsequent decades of debate, growth, and change have led not only to the resolution of this paradox but also to its transcendence. Achieving organizational identity was not uneventful, and as members' published research focused increasingly on the sociology of religion, form — painfully — followed function: ACSS became ASR.
