The development proposed here proceeds from politics (Ferry, Léon, Bourgeois, Jaurès, freethinkers), to moral and social philosophy (Jean-Marie Guyau, Alfred Fouillée, Gustave Belot, Emile Boutroux), and then to sociology (Durkheim) and thought analysis (Alain). The ambiguous and selective usage of Comte’s texts and ideas, a blend of homage and aversion, reflects the liberty of interpretation that permits the enrichment of a philosophy beyond its original setting. This inquiry favors this line of research and updates the means of capitalizing upon a heritage that we would be wrong to believe no longer exists. | ||
