Medieval alchemy has long been viewed as the theater of ideas and notions of Aristotelian origin whose adaptation to the practice of alchemy, that is, to distillation and sublimation, led to the formation of philosophical theories explaining how the art of transmutation became possible. It appears to us, however, that not all of these ideas derived from Aristotle. Plato, considered by the authors of alchemy as an alchemist, and his medieval school, were equally drawn upon, and in our view their influence was felt in the elaboration of these alchemical theories of the Middle Ages. This study of the three works endeavors to show how the alchemists employed the philosophical tradition that was theirs, in blending diverse forms of thought, those of Aristotle, Hermes or Plato. | ||
| 520 | |a RésuméDans cet article, l’auteur s’attache à rechercher des traces de platonisme dans trois corpus alchimiques du moyen âge attribués à Roger Bacon, au médecin Arnaud de Villeneuve et à Thomas d’Aquin. Longtemps, en effet, l’alchimie médiévale fut observée comme le théâtre d’idées et de notions d’origine aristotélicienne dont l’adaptation à la pratique alchimique, celle de la distillation et de la sublimation, aboutit à la formation de théories philosophiques expliquant comment l’art de la transmutation devenait possible. Cependant, il nous a paru que ces notions ne relevaient pas toutes d’Aristote. Platon, considéré par les auteurs d’alchimica comme un alchimiste, et son école médiévale furent également mis à contribution et, selon nous, leur influence se ressentit dans l’élaboration de ces théories alchimiques du moyen-âge. L’étude conjointe de ces trois corpus tend à démontrer comment les alchimistes utilisèrent la tradition philosophique qui était la leur, en mariant diverses formes de pensées, celles d’Aristote, d’Hermès ou de Platon. | ||
