The present article re-situates Sertillanges' speculative reflection on creation within the perspective that was his own, that of a philosophical apologetic, simultaneously oriented ad extra, toward his philosophical contemporaries, and ad intra, toward his fellow Christians. So it is that Sertillanges places Thomas Aquinas in dialogue with Henri Bergson to show that the Thomist understanding of creation ex nihilo escapes the Bergsonian criticism of the idea of nothingness, yet he also denounces the illusions that lead astray no small number of Christian thinkers, ancient and modern, as they reduce the idea of creation to that of a temporal beginning, which leads them to fail to recognize Christianity's real contribution to philosophy. It is, however, in his analysis of Thomas' texts themselves that Sertillanges shows himself the most penetrating and innovative. He demands a grasp of the Thomist doctrine of the relation of creation even in its ultimate consequences, upending the naive or false representations of creative causality, boldly joining the total dependence and radical autonomy of creatures, and drawing his contemporaries' gaze toward the mystery of God, "the necessary Unknowable". | ||

Le présent article resitue cette réflexion spéculative de Sertillanges sur la création dans la perspective qui fut la sienne, celle d’une apologétique philosophique, orientée à la fois ad extra, vers ses contemporains philosophes, et ad intra, vers ses frères chrétiens. Ainsi Sertillanges fait-il dialoguer Thomas d’Aquin et Henri Bergson pour montrer que la compréhension thomiste de la création ex nihilo échappe à la critique bergsonienne de l’idée de néant, mais il dénonce aussi les illusions où tombent maints penseurs chrétiens, anciens ou modernes, lorsqu’ils réduisent l’idée de création à celle d’un commencement temporel, ce qui les conduit à méconnaître l’apport réel du christianisme en philosophie. C’est cependant dans son analyse des textes mêmes de saint Thomas que Sertillanges se montre le plus pénétrant et le plus novateur : il oblige à saisir jusqu’en ses ultimes conséquences la doctrine thomiste de la relation de création, renversant les représentations naïves ou fausses de la causalité créatrice, conjuguant avec audace dépendance totale et autonomie radicale des créatures, et portant le regard des contemporains vers le mystère de Dieu, « l’Inconnaissable nécessaire ». | ||
