The aim of the reappraisal of Ritschl's theology has been and still is to reach a fair understanding of his theological achievement, which has sometimes been misunderstood and even caricatured in the late nineteenth and in the twentieth century. The survey focuses on Ritschl's use of Martin Luther, his debate with F. H. R. von Frank (1827-1894) on God as absolute, his interest in Kant and Lotze (1817-1881), his relation to metaphysics, and two decisive aspects of his constructive theology: his emphasis on community and the kingdom of God.
