Résumé:This is a survey article on the thought and legacy of the celebrated Muslim scientist and polymath Abū al-Bīrūnī. It provides a brief background on his life and times, key contributions, scholarly method, ethics, and assesses his legacy in light of recent publications. Aspects that are highlighted are the interplay of science and religion in reference to Ibn Rushd and Ghazālī, the critical reception of Aristotle in classical Islam in relation to Ibn Sīnā, and the influence of the Arabic intellectual culture on Western Europe.
