The Russian Orthodox Church and Medvedev's Modernisation Policy: Allies or Foes?

In this paper I follow Anthony Giddens and José Casanova in defining modernity as a mode of social organisation in which globalisation, rationality and secularisation play a crucial role. I apply this theoretical framework to the response of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) to (former) President Dm...

I apply this theoretical framework to the response of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) to (former) President Dmitri Medvedev's proposed modernisation programme. After a brief summary of Medvedev's ideas I analyse the reactions which these generated from key church representatives. I argue that the ROC was initially slow to react at all, but that this changed noticeably after Medvedev modified his ideas in his Address to the Federal Assembly in 2010. I explore the reasons for this development while asking, on the theoretical level, what can be learned from this about the ROC's relationship with modernity.
