It will be observed that the historical Jesus is widely misunderstood and that this confusion arises from two significant sources. The first of these is that studies of Jesus tend to be confined to the discipline of Christian Theology (thus Jewish perspectives may offer a necessary corrective). The second is that the thematic approach to religions, endemic to many secondary school Religious Education (RE) syllabi, may result in the undergraduate student having paid insufficient attention to questions of historical context. The article concludes with a proposal of some ‘relative certainties’ that can be presented to students about Jesus.
