To achieve this, three aspects are considered: first, the proposed concept is defined according to the long-term goals and objectives of Islamism which unite the respective groups and individuals; second, since the methods used to implement Islamist goals are heterogeneous and include both violent and non-violent approaches, five different types of Islamism are identified; and third, as actors move from one group to another under certain circumstances, the proposed concept also takes the inherent dynamics of Islamist typologies into account. Thus, the elaborated concept can serve as a framework for empirical studies and it helps to explain theoretically why initially non-violent Islamists might develop into militants and vice versa.
