The goal is to show how "prophet" classifications emerged within a context of colonization and religious dispute. Continued use reinforces narratives of Native disappearance, if not excuses anti-Native violence, in American religious studies. In response, I call on scholars to decolonize their writing and teaching about Native visionaries by focusing on their media as evidence of the futures they projected for their people. Este artículo de tres partes muestra el uso de la palabra "profeta" para describir a actores nativos como Neolin y Handsome Lake en Norteamérica y en el Estados Unidos durante una época temprana; detalla la perpetuación y los efectos de la categoría en el trabajo de etnólogos, antropólogos, historiadores y especialistas en los estudios de la religión; y, finalmente, propone un enfoque en los medios de comunicación de los visionarios, que incluye tanto wampum y mapas como articulaciones de la identidad como gente de los nativos—del concepto "peoplehood," prestado de los estudios nativo-americanos e indígenas.
