Their activities as part of the institution of the Church have come first, with little or no consideration for what congregations as religious communities meant to women, why women felt attracted to them, and what they found there. Whereas in other countries, under the influence of women's studies, renewed interest has been shown in religious women and their organizations, the Netherlands lags behind in this respect, in spite of some promising initiatives. The Catholic Study Center at Nijmegen has recently started a research project on this subject, which means that acquired insights from women's studies will be incorporated into the historiography of Dutch Catholicism, and conversely, the attention of women's studies will be drawn to the historical significance of religion for women and the development of a female identity. | ||
