| 520 | |a Like their colleagues from the old order before them, the Jesuits in the Belgian provinces that were reestablished in 1832 contributed to the study of the ecclesiastical history of the southern Netherlands. Initially, their contribution was of a militant and apologetic nature, concentrated on defending the Catholic Church against new heresies. From 1880 onward, however, Belgian Jesuit historiography (including Bollandist historiography) became more scholarly; the most progressive members of the order started propagating the rules of historical criticism with the express purpose of disarming their opponents. The historical defensive turned into an offensive. Finally, after World War I, the historiography of the Jesuits merged into national Pirennist historiography. The culmination of this development was 'Histoire de l'Eglise en Belgique' by E. de Moreau. | ||
