This goes both for the southern Low Countries, which have abundant confraternity archives, and for the northern Low Countries, where the transmission of archives was apparently less successful. From a scholarly point of view, a division between confraternities and various kinds of guilds is an absolute necessity, even though in practice a strict division is not always so obvious. It is also possible to distinguish between various types of confraternities. For most of these types, a great deal of research has yet to be done. In spite of recent studies on the subject, a number of misunderstandings about the operation of confraternities still persist. Most, for instance, were not involved in the care of the poor and the sick, not even when their own members were concerned. In most cases, the activities of members of confraternities in the 15th-16th centuries were not extensive. For many members, paying an entrance fee and a number of other financial donations, which allowed them to share in the masses and prayers of the brotherhood, was often the only actual activity.
