To begin with, there are the years in which he worked as exegetist, first at the major seminary Rijsenberg in Utrecht (1933-45) and next at the Catholic University in Nijmegen (1945-51). There then followed the period in Utrecht as suffragan, archbishop, and cardinal. Moreover, as cardinal he made his own particular mark - from 1960 - on the government of the universal Catholic Church. There was not only continuity but also discontinuity between these two phases of his life. The assessment of Alfrink's policies as an administrator is based on an interpretative framework that is linked with Alfrink's own vision of the Catholic Church as an organization and community of faith that is both universal and local at the same time. In this, the universal aspect is mainly embodied in the papacy, and the local aspect in local bishops. During the period of his administration, Alfrink dedicated himself in particular to the establishment of a power structure within the Church in which papacy and episcopacy coexist harmoniously. | ||
