Frederix's study of Frans Thomas Corselis, papal nuncio and visitator for the regulars of Belgium from 1834 to 1850, there are a number of lacunae as a result of the fact that the author had to limit his research to the sources that were available in Belgium. Several such lacunae are filled on the basis of three files from the archive of the Congregatie voor Bisschoppen en Regulieren [Congregation for Bishops and Regulars], which is now in the archive of the Congregatie voor Religieuzen en Seculiere Instituten [Congregation for the Religious and for Secular Institutes]. These Vatican files contain new information about the background and treatment of the complaint by the Norbertines filed against Corselis by the Holy See in connection with a regulation on recruitment and training imposed by him. All this is considered in the framework of the anti-Louvain restoration mentality of the protagonists. Details are disclosed about the influence of nuncio Raphael Fornari. To counterbalance the authority of the Belgian bishops, which was considered too liberal, Fornari supported the Norbertines in their pursuit of autonomy. The Vatican files also clarify the attempts to restore the internal administrative structure of the order and the reactions this evoked from the side of the Belgian episcopacy and from Corselis and his coworkers. Finally, the positive contributions to this dispute by the Dutch Jesuit general Jan Roothaan and the Jesuit J. Van Hecke are discussed. | ||
