520 |a An introductory contribution to a symposium on the importance of three Nijmegen professors born a hundred years ago for the integration of Dutch (minority) Catholicism in the national society. Of these three L. J. Rogier was the one who, as a historian, contributed most explicitly to this integration. As a culturally engaged Catholic he never ceased to rouse his fellow believers to greater activity in national culture. His aim, however, was also to make non-Catholic colleagues aware of their prejudices. As a socially engaged historian for whom the past was closely linked to the present, he took an interest in his Catholic ancestors from a contemporary point of view. This interest also involved the rise of the Dutch nation, too long considered an unequivocally Protestant phenomenon. A self-taught scholar, he was highly concerned about the scholarly objectivity of the products of his pen. The causes of the discrepancy between the tenor of Rogier's work and the scholarly paradigm of contemporary Catholic historians in the Netherlands are not addressed here.
